Flares Detected in the Swift-XRT Light Curves of Grb Afterglows
Abstract
About 40% of the GRBs observed with the XRT on board the Swift satellite show flare activity. Some of these flares have a very large fluence and the energy involved is of the order of that one emitted during the whole afterglow phase (in the same 0.2-10 keV energy band). We will discuss the correlation time of occurrence versus flare duration and illustrate the distribution of the energetic involved for the flares in GRB with known redshift. Flares might indicate that the central engine remains active for long period after the prompt emission. They can be due to internal shocks following new discontinuous injection of energy.
